A woman in Berhampur of Ganjam district set a glaring example by donating her organs. The 56-year-old, who was declared brain dead on November 2 at AMRI Hospital in Bhubaneswar, will give a new lease of life to six persons, as her family donated her organs.
As per reports, the woman was critically injured in an accident recently. She was critical due to a brain Haemorrhage and was admitted to AMRI Hospital and declared brain dead on November 2. Doctors did their level best to save the woman, but their efforts did not pay off.
Then her family members decided to donate her organs and sought permission from the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO), a statutory body under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. It was set up to implement the National Organ Transplant Programme (NOTP) involving deceased donor activity. SOTTO operates under the Department of Nephrology of the SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack.
After getting permission from the SOTTO, the liver, lungs and kidneys of the woman were removed at AMRI Hospital, and were sent to Apollo Hospitals in Chennai, Kolkata, MGM Hospital in Vhennia, SUM Hospital in Bhubaneswar and SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack.

As for organ harvesting, Dr Bhagya Rajan Jena of AMRI Hospital said, "It is the first case in terms of organ harvesting on a large scale. Attempts had been made in the past on large-scale organ harvesting from a person, but they were encumbered with some technical problems. All organs had not been taken in those cases. As per informal information, this case has got maximum success.”
Speaking to the media, Dr Sidhartha Mishra, the superintendent of AMRI said, “After the organ harvesting, the organs will come in cold packaging. Organs will be taken to the airport by creating a green corridor. The organs will be transported through the green corridor. Two teams from Chennai and a team from Kolkata have come. Some organs will be sent to local hospitals."
