India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday issued an Orange Warning for thunderstorm with lightning and gusty wind for six districts of Odisha for May 7 and 8. These districts are Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Ganjam, Gajapati and Kandhamal.
Moreover, the regional Meteorological Department, Bhubaneswar has issued Yellow Warning for lightning, thunderstorm and wind to as many as 14 districts in Odisha.
As per the prediction by IMD, several parts of the State will witness Nor’wester triggered rainfalls till May 10. Under its effect, daytime temperature in most parts of the State will record a fall by four to six degree Celsius in the next three to four days.
“Light to moderate thunderstorm with gusty wind speed reaching 40- 50 kmph, lightning and light to moderate rain likely to affect some parts of districts of Nabarangpur, Nuapada, Kalahandi and Bolangir in next three hours,” read IMD bulletin on Tuesday.
“Light to moderate thunderstorm with lightning and light to moderate rain likely to affect some parts of districts of Khordha (including Bhubaneswar), Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Balasore, Sundargarh, Bhadrak and Mayurbhanj within next three hours,” the bulletin further read.
IMD has advised people to keep a watch on the weather for worsening conditions and be ready to move to safer places to be protected from lightning strike.
Notably, the Nor’wester rains have brought much-needed relief from the scorching heat after a prolonged heat wave spell. Bhubaneswar residents witnessed rainfall followed by gusty wind battering the city on Monday afternoon.
Under the impact of the storm, branches of trees, even huge ones, broke off at different places in the capital city. In areas near Dhauli, broken branches fell on roads, disrupting vehicular movement for some time. Asika in Ganjam district experienced severe hailstorms on Monday.
