The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday condemned the behaviour and 'disrespect' shown towards the Speaker by BJD MLAs who tried to climb atop the podium during the proceedings of the Odisha Assembly.

The scenes of two BJD MLAs- Madhab Dhada and Romancha Ranjan Biswal climbing onto the Speaker’s podium and some trying to enter via stairs have been condemned by the ruling BJP MLAs.

The Odisha Assembly witnessed pandemonium over the Chikiti hooch tragedy and uproars created by the Opposition demanding resignation of the Excise Minister.

“The way the Opposition MLAs, who were in power for the last 24 years and claimed that they were giving respect to women and won votes, showed disrespect towards a woman Speaker, I condemn such act, said Chikiti MLA Manoranjan Dyan Samantara.

The BJP MLA further said that the Opposition is bringing adjournment motions as they are fearing to discuss and are not allowing the House to function. As a result, people’s money is being lost. The previous corrupt government fears to have discussions. Today’s behaviour by the Opposition MLAs is not acceptable in a healthy democracy, he added.

BJD MLA Madhab Dhada said, “We had stalled the House demanding resignation of the Excise Minister. As our demand was not met, we staged a protest in a democratic manner. Our party always respects women and it is committed to it. As Speaker, she should listen to us, we have done everything in a democratic manner.”

However, BJP MLA Tankadhar Tripathy said, “The way the Opposition MLAs climbed onto the woman Speaker’s podium and also climbed via stairs is not acceptable. The people of Odisha are watching this. Those who were in power for 24 years are doing such acts in the House. What does the opposition want? The government is ready to discuss. The Opposition is only moving adjournment motions; they are not ready for a discussion. The act by the Opposition members is shameful.”
