One person died and two others sustained critical burn injuries allegedly in a firecracker explosion inside a house in Beguniapada area of Ganjam district on Friday evening. The injured were immediately hospitalized.

As per reports, the deceased has been identified as Jitu Pradhan, son of Raju Pradhan of Jagatisahi under Beguniapada police limits.  The people in Jagatsahi and the peripheral villagers were shocked after hearing a massive explosion in the evening.

They came to know that the explosion took place on the second floor of Raju Pradhan’s house.

They rushed to the spot and saw columns of black smoke billowing out from the top floor of the building. Remnants of burst crackers were strewn all over the place.

They found Jitu and two others critically injured. The injured were immediately rushed to Kodala community health centre where Jitu was pronounced dead on arrival. The two others are yet to be identified.

Given the circumstances at the explosion site, people suspected that Jitu and two of his friends were making firecrackers, possibly for Diwali.

Sources said, on being informed, a team of police officials from Benguniapada Police Station visited the site and started an investigation.

Further updates on the matter are awaited.
