The Odisha government is set to introduce 'Poshan Kendras' based on the successful Gujarat model, announced Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister Krushna Chandra Patra on Sunday.
These centers will provide essential commodities at subsidized rates to both economically weaker sections and middle-class families. Items such as rice, pulses, flour, and cooking oil will be made available at these Poshan Kendras.
To ensure affordability, both the Central and Odisha government will jointly provide subsidies for the initiative. As part of the pilot project, 35 Poshan Kendras will be set up initially. If successful, the government plans to extend the initiative to every panchayat across the state, informed Patra.
In preparation for the large-scale rollout, a dedicated team of officials will visit Gujarat to study the implementation model and gather insights. The government is expected to finalize the necessary policies and take a conclusive decision on expanding the program in the near future, the Minister said.
The distribution of ration and essential supplies will continue with the combined support of the state and central governments.
