In a major push to strengthen foundational education in Odisha, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has announced the establishment of 835 model primary schools across the state in the first phase. The announcement was made during a review meeting held at Lok Seva Bhawan to assess the progress of the Godabarish Mishra Adarsha Prathamik Vidyalaya initiative.
Chief Minister Majhi stated that one ideal school will be established in the headquarters of each gram panchayat, with a focus on delivering quality education and inclusive infrastructure. Each school will be constructed at an estimated cost of up to Rs 7 crore, aiming to provide modern amenities, smart classrooms, and improved learning environments for rural children.
“These model schools will set a new benchmark for primary education in the state. The goal is to ensure that children in remote and backward regions have access to quality education at par with urban standards,” the Chief Minister said.
To be eligible for upgradation under the Godabarish Mishra Model School framework, a school must fulfill three key criteria:
Enrolment of more than 100 students.
Availability of more than 2 acres of land.
Education offered from pre-primary (Shishu Vatika) to Class VIII
The initiative is part of the Odisha government's broader mission to overhaul school education in Odisha and reduce urban-rural disparities in access and quality.
CM Majhi also highlighted that free transportation facilities will be provided to students, particularly those residing in remote or difficult-to-reach areas, ensuring that commute does not become a barrier to education.
The model schools will carry the legacy of Godabarish Mishra, a pioneer of modern education in Odisha and a strong advocate for rural upliftment through schooling. The Chief Minister reiterated the state’s commitment to making education accessible, equitable, and empowering for every child, regardless of geography or socio-economic status.
Officials stated that the first phase will be implemented in a time-bound manner, and the necessary budgetary provisions and administrative support have already been initiated. The state government plans to scale up the initiative further based on its success and feedback from stakeholders.
