On the occasion of World Cancer Day, the Odisha government has unveiled plans to establish an all-encompassing cancer registry. The significant endeavour aims at the systematic collection of cancer-related data, segmented into hospital-based and population-based categories, to gain a comprehensive understanding of the disease across the state.
Currently, hospital-based cancer registries are operational at prominent medical institutions including Acharya Harihar, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Bhubaneswar, and Apollo Bhubaneswar.
These registries compile and scrutinise patient information to understand the patterns and characteristics of cancer cases treated at these facilities.
In a decisive move, the Odisha government has resolved to set up a population-based cancer registry throughout Odisha. This initiative is set to offer detailed insights into cancer prevalence and the types of cancer affecting different regions within the state.
It will enable the identification of areas with high incidence rates and explore underlying factors contributing to these trends. Moreover, the registry will assess the accessibility and effectiveness of existing treatment services, equipping the government with data to make informed public health decisions.

Screening and Early Detection Efforts
Cancer screening services are being carried out at Ayushman Arogya Mandirs throughout Odisha, reinforcing the vital role of early detection in significantly improving treatment outcomes. Early detection remains a cornerstone of effective cancer management.
Treatment Provision Under National Health Schemes
In line with national health initiatives, the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) and Gopabandhu Jan Arogya Yojana are offering comprehensive cancer treatment facilities, ensuring access to medical care for patients diagnosed with the disease.
This strategic implementation underscores a commitment to reducing the cancer burden within the state by enhancing health infrastructure and ensuring equitable access to medical resources for all citizens.
