In a landmark decision aimed at promoting inclusivity, the Odisha government has decided to introduce a separate category for the third gender in all state job application forms.

The Department of Social Justice and Empowerment has issued a directive to every government department, instructing them to add the “third gender” option alongside the existing male and female categories.

This step is expected to end the long-standing confusion faced by transgender applicants while filling out government job forms. Until now, they were often compelled to choose between “male” or “female,” leading to significant challenges and discrimination during the recruitment process. With this decision, applicants identifying as a third gender will be able to select their category clearly in both online and offline forms.

The move brings Odisha in line with the central government, which had already implemented this provision earlier. Rights groups and members of the transgender community have long demanded such recognition in the state, and they have welcomed this decision as a progressive step towards social justice and empowerment.

The initiative is seen as a significant stride toward equality, ensuring fair representation for the transgender community in government jobs.

“If they want to ensure equality, and if PM Modi has instructed to include transgender community in the social mainstream, then I request him to implement it at the ground level. Just issuing a letter would not be of any help,” stated Meera Parida, Member of the National Council for Transgender Persons.
