In a move aimed at strengthening irrigation and water conservation in western Odisha, the state government has announced the construction of four in-stream storage (ISS) structures on the Mahanadi River in Sunarnapur district.

These structures will come up at Godhaneswar, Khairamal, Harihar Jor, and Surubali, covering both Birmaharajpur and Ulunda blocks. The aim is to improve irrigation, boost groundwater levels, and provide reliable sources of drinking water. They are also expected to support flood control, fish farming, and animal husbandry.

Rs 323 Crore Worth Projects Unveiled

The announcement was made during Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi’s visit to Subarnapur on Saturday, where he launched 56 development projects worth over Rs 323 crore.

Among them, 11 projects worth Rs 80 crore were inaugurated, while the foundation stones were laid for 45 more, costing around Rs 244 crore. These initiatives span across infrastructure sectors such as roads, bridges, healthcare, irrigation, and student hostels, along with mega lift irrigation schemes.

Cultural Pride Meets Development Vision

Sonepur district, known for its handloom, handicrafts, and spiritual legacy, has been promised focused development. The region’s cultural richness, rooted in the teachings of Saint Poet Bhima Bhoi, has historically held significance in Odisha’s identity.

The Chief Minister reiterated the Odisha government’s commitment to regional progress and inclusive welfare, with beneficiaries of government schemes receiving assistance during the event.
