Babilata Behera, former supply inspector of Kaniha Block in Anugul district and currently posted at the office of the Chief Supply Officer (CSO), Baripada in Mayurbhanj district, has been convicted in a bribery case and sentenced to four years of rigorous imprisonment.

According to an official release from Odisha Vigilance, Behera was found guilty of demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 43,000 from a sub-wholesaler of kerosene. 

The bribe was sought in exchange for signing the utilisation certificate of kerosene distribution and issuing a release order in his favour.

She was charge-sheeted under Sections 13(2), 13(1)(d) and Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. After a detailed trial, the Special Judge, Vigilance, Angul, pronounced the conviction on June 30, 2025, and awarded the sentence of four years of rigorous imprisonment along with a monetary fine.

Following the conviction, Behera was immediately taken into judicial custody to serve her sentence. Odisha Vigilance has announced that it will now move the competent authority to initiate her dismissal from government service as per applicable service rules.
