Every year, Odisha witnesses cyclone, affecting the lives of thousands of people in several districts. Although the government and civic society together overcome the disaster, there is an immediate need for a detailed spatial plan for disaster resilience, management, and recovery.
Now, Mission Shakti has buckled up to make SHG members the heart of disaster response, mitigating the effects of flood, and reconstructing their livelihood. Women can play a vital role in disaster risk reduction and mitigation.
They can play a great role in the rescue, rehabilitation, and mitigation during disasters. All it requires is a coordinated effort and proper preparedness put in place. With reduced vulnerabilities and increased resilience in mind, Mission Shakti in collaboration with OSDMA (Odisha State Disaster Management Authority) will provide basic training to SHG members.
The training programme will be imparted in at least 3922 panchayats of 14 disaster-prone districts. At least 50 SHG members of every panchayat will be given training to reduce casualties and quick recovery during natural disasters.
“We have provided training in the rescue and evacuation process to over 200 SHG members in Ganjam and Chhatrapur. They have been well-trained to assist the administration in the evacuation process. Basic training like providing first aid to victims is the least they can do,” informed Sumitra Patnaik, Additional Secretary, Mission Shakti.
“Now, we have signed an MOU to extend the training programme to another 14 disaster-prone districts. We aim to provide the training to 1.81L SHG members in the next one year,” she added.
