“After careful consideration, Odisha government has been pleased to take the following measures along with rescheduling of the timing of classes in all educational institutions under the School and Mass Education Department i.e. government, government-aided and privately managed schools to mitigate Heat Wave situation in the State during Summer-2O25,” the notification read.

Drinking water and other arrangements

In all schools, extra care has to be taken to ensure the availability of drinking water. Wherever required, tubewells available inside the school campus may be repaired immediately to ensure an uninterrupted drinking water supply.

Sufficient ORS packets are to be kept in schools and be provided to students and staff requiring the same. Outdoor activities have to be restricted so as the students not to be exposed to heat wave conditions.

All parents should be sensitised to ensure that their children carry a water bottle while going to school. This should be sufficiently publicised to create awareness among the parents, an official communiqué issued in this regard emphasised.

Schools may also be advised to allocate some time during school hours to give heat wave precautionary tips to the students, the S&ME notification insisted.

“You are also directed to keep a close watch on the weather condition and are authorised to modify the school timing based on field situation,” the circular issued to all Collectors-cum-District Magistrates in Odisha said.

Worth mentioning, the Odisha government on Wednesday had announced a change in the school timings keeping in view the ongoing heat wave conditions prevalent in the State for the past few weeks.

As per Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari, morning classes were to be held from April 2, 2025, which has now been changed.

The Government has announced revised operating hours for Anganwadi Centers (AWCs) across the State in response to ongoing heat wave. A circular from the Department of Women & Child Development dated March 18 and marked as ‘MOST URGENT’ directed the district collectors to implement the changes immediately.
