The unemployment rate among youths in Odisha has marginally come down as compared to the last fiscal, a study revealed. A study by the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) for the period July 2023 to June 2024 shows a two per cent decline in the state’s unemployment rate.

The study was released earlier this week by the Labour Bureau and IT highlights a 2% decline in Odisha’s unemployment rate for youths in the age group of 15-29. However, the lack of jobs continues to remain a concern in the urban areas.

While the unemployment rate was around 13.8% in 2022-23, it has declined to 11.1%, the study revealed. Moreover, the survey showed an improvement in the participation of women in job place.

As per the PLFS study, unemployment among youths in rural areas has registered a substantial decline from 12.7% in 2022-23 to 9.3% in 2023-24. However, in urban areas, it rose from 21.8 per cent to 22.9 per cent. The overall unemployment rate across all age groups is 3.1%, marginally less than last year when it was 3.9 per cent.

On the other hand, the overall unemployment rate of males in the states has decreased from 4.7% to 3.3% while the female workforce has slightly increased from 2.4% to 2.7 percent.
