The prestigious Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has got its first woman vice-chancellor in the form of Naima Khatoon. Khatoon’s appointment recently received approval from the President of India Droupadi Murmu as well as the Election Commission in view of the model code of conduct being in place for the Lok Sabha elections.
Not many know that Naima Khatoon hails from Odisha’s Jajpur district and she is the first woman Vice Chancellor of AMU in its over 100 years of history.
Khatoon took charge from her spouse Professor Mohammad Gulrez who was earlier officiating as pro vice-chancellor. Before taking charge of AMU VC, she worked as the principal of Aligarh Muslim University’s Women’s College for around 10 years (since 2014).
Earlier, the AMU Court had shortlisted three candidates for the post and forwarded the names to President Droupadi Murmu for selection in November last year. A PhD in psychology from AMU, Khatoon was appointed as a lecturer and later elevated to professor position in 2006.
She continued there before joining as principal of the Women’s College in 2014.
