Odisha Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati is adopting a fresh and proactive approach to governance, holding a series of high-level meetings with the state’s top leaders. On Monday evening, the Governor held a nearly one-hour discussion with Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi at Raj Bhavan, focusing on the state’s development, governance, and future roadmap.
Following this, he visited the official residence of the Law Minister for a personal interaction and departmental review. The very next day, the Revenue Minister met the Governor at Raj Bhavan and briefed him on the progress of his department’s programs.
This unusual sequence of meetings has triggered widespread discussions in political circles and among the public. Many see it as a move by the Governor to bridge the gap between the administration and the people.
Under this new strategy, the Governor is expected to hold monthly review meetings with the Chief Minister and also visit ministers to monitor departmental performance. These reviews will culminate in detailed reports to be sent to the central government.
“This is a good step towards better governance. The CM will report to the Governor all the development works taken by the government on a monthly basis. Moreover, the Governor himself will seek reports from other ministers also. This report will then be sent to the Centre,” informed Akshay Sahu, Political Analyst.
Commenting on the new strategy, Revenue Minister Suresh Pujari said, “This is a unique step by the Governor. He is not just the Head of the State, but also the guardian of the people and the state government.”
“We are looking forward to his directions, and his steps will be a great step for the state government. We are working now as per his directions,” informed Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan.
Previously, Governor Kambhampati had toured various districts to assess the ground-level implementation of government schemes. He has interacted with citizens to evaluate how effectively programs are reaching them.
At a Raj Bhavan event on June 23, 2025, the Governor had expressed concern that even some officials were unaware of certain central schemes. This concern seems to have prompted his new, hands-on approach.
Sources suggest the Governor may also hold discussions with opposition leaders and MLAs to get a holistic view of the state’s development and challenges. This marks the first time a Governor in Odisha has undertaken such an assertive and regular oversight of state governance.
