As many as two persons were seriously injured in separate road accidents along National Highway No. 55 in Dhenkanal on Saturday.

As a result, irate people in the area staged a protest by blocking the road. They also detained Panchayatiraj Minister Rabi Naik’s vehicle while he was crossing the road at that time.

As per reports, an unidentified truck hit two bike-borne persons near College bypass and Mahishapata bypass roads. Both the bikers sustained serious injuries in the process.

Following the development, several local residents lost their cool. They staged a protest by blocking the road demanding expansion of the Highway.

Meanwhile, Panchayatiraj Minister Rabi Naik was passing by that road during the time of the protest. The irate villagers also detained the Minister’s vehicle for a long time.

The Minister reportedly listened to the grievances of people with patience. Subsequently, local police and some officials of the district administration reached the spot and managed to pacify the protestors. Eventually, the protest was called off.

Notably, accidents have been taking place along National Highway No. 55 frequently. Though local people have been demanding expansion of the road umpteen times, their pleas have so far fallen on deaf ears, they alleged.
