In a shocking sequence of events, a young man from Bhatigaon in Bijepur attempted suicide twice within 24 hours — first by slitting his throat at home, then jumping from the first floor of Burla's VIMSAR hospital in Sambalpur on Wednesday, where he was under treatment.

The distressing incident unfolded at Burla’s Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) hospital, where the young man made a second suicide attempt after being admitted for the first one. The young man, reportedly from Bhatigaon village under Bijepur block and NAC limits of Bargarh district, was already in a critical condition after slitting his throat for unknown reasons.

The injured was brought to VIMSAR by his family in critical condition early this morning and was admitted to the ENT Department for emergency treatment. Following initial medical care, he was shifted to the Surgery Ward for further treatment.

However, taking advantage of a momentary lapse in attention by his family, he perhaps decided to take an extreme step and then jumped from first floor of the hospital building in another desperate attempt to end his life by suicide. He survived the fall from a height but sustained serious injuries. Fortunately, his life has been narrowly saved once again.

The exact reasons behind these repeated suicide attempts still remain unclear.

Police have begun a probe to uncover the cause and circumstances that led to this tragic sequence of events. Meanwhile, the youth continues to receive critical medical care and remains under close observation at the government-run health facility.

“He (the young man) was initially admitted to Casualty Ward. I had gone to see him. He was about to be taken to the OT (Operation Theatre) of ENT Department, when he jumped from the Ward (building). He fell into the drain. Our security staff and attendants of some patients rescued him. Dressing of the wounds was done, and the condition of the patient (injured) was good,” VIMSAR Superintendent, Prof. Lal Mohan Nayak, expressed when contacted.

“When asked, the young man told us that his mental state was not good. We are verifying whether it is true or not. After he gets cured and wounds are recovered, his mental health will also be taken care of, and due treatment will be provided,” Prof. Nayak added.
