In a shocking incident, a lawyer allegedly set himself on fire by pouring petrol on himself in Bhubaneswar, resulting in his immediate death on Thursday night. The tragic event occurred near the Pandara area under Mancheswar Police Station in Bhubaneswar, leaving neighbours and locals in shock. The deceased has been identified as 46-year-old Deepak Kumar Sahu, a practising lawyer who lived in the city with his elderly mother, wife, and two daughters.
Neighbours reported that Deepak had faced mental breakdowns in the past and had been admitted to a medical facility twice for treatment. Following his discharge, he reportedly stayed mostly indoors and rarely interacted with others.
On being informed about the incident, Mancheswar Police rushed to the scene and recovered the body before sending it to the Capital Hospital for post-mortem.
A petrol bottle, allegedly used in the act, was recovered by the authorities. The family has been questioned, and the police are examining all possible angles, including personal and professional motives, sources in the police said.
Zone ACP confirmed that a scientific team will investigate the site to collect forensic evidence and determine the circumstances leading to the tragic death.
“During questioning, the family members revealed that the advocate had suffered brain-related ailments twice in the past and was under treatment for mental health issues. Although he had been prescribed medication, he had reportedly stopped taking it for the past few months,” said the Zone ACP.

On the other hand, neighbours of the deceased claimed that the lawyer often had altercations with his wife and insisted that he could not have taken such an extreme step.
“The incident occurred around 8 pm. By the time we reached his home, he was already nearly 80 per cent burnt. We immediately informed the police,” said a neighbour of the deceased lawyer.
