Odisha Land Jihad: PCCF seeks report from DFO after NGT notice on 100-acre forest land encroachment

The Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) on Tuesday sought a report from DFO after a notice from the National Green Tribunal (NGT) over alleged 'land jihad' in Odisha's Malkangiri district. The matter relates to the alleged encroachment of approximately 100 acres of forest land in Motu area to establish a settlement named 'Islam Nagar'.

As per reports, Islam Nagar has been built on forest land near National Highway-326, surrounded by dense forests along the Saberi river bank. Furthermore, the encroached land saw the construction of buildings, roads, and other infrastructure, including the building of a mud road and wire fencing.

The construction was allegedly funded through various government schemes, including the MNREGA, with over Rs 9 lakh spent on road construction. Furthermore, it has been alleged that large ponds were excavated, warehouses built, and transformers installed, including extensive use of state resources.

Taking suo motu cognisance, NGT sought clarification from PCCF and Malkangiri Collector within 15 days. Since the matter relates to the Eastern Zonal Bench, Kolkata, the PCCF and District Collector have been directed to file their reply before the Eastern Zonal Bench of the Tribunal at least one week before the next date of hearing on December 3.

'If any respondent directly files the reply without routing it through his advocate then the said respondent will remain virtually present to assist the Tribunal," tread the notification issued by NGT.
