Odisha journalists regain access to Lok Seva Bhawan; new guidelines issued

In a major decision, the new BJP government in Odisha has now allowed journalists to enter Lok Seva Bhavan for reporting.  An official notification in this regard has been issued by the Department of Information and Public Relations (I&PR).

This marks a significant change after restrictions were imposed by the previous BJD-government during the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the pandemic, the previous BJD government had prohibited journalists from regular access to the Lok Seva Bhavan, significantly hindering the flow of information.

The lifting of these restrictions reflects a shift towards greater transparency and openness within the new government.

As per the new decision, both accredited and non-accredited journalists have been granted entry, promoting inclusivity and ensuring diverse media representation.

This move is anticipated to foster improved communication between the government and the press, reinforcing democracy in Odisha.

“In the backdrop that the notification No 1556 dated 6.2.2013 of the Govt in I&PR department does not adequately regulate the recommendation in respect of applications for Secretariat entry pass of media personnel, it is felt necessary to annul the existing notification,” read an official notification.

The new notification will be referred as ‘Guidelines for issue of Secretariat Admission Pass’ to the representatives of Press/Media which unless redefined otherwise later, will mean newspapers/periodicals/news agencies/ electronic media.
