The peaceful protest launched by the students of Biju Patnaik Homoeopathic Medical College at Berhampur in Ganjam district entered its second day on Saturday. The agitating students said they would continue their protest till their demands are not met.

The students, staging the protest under the banner of the All Odisha AYUSH Students’ Association, claimed that the government is using them whenever their service is required. But when it comes to giving justice to them, the government is dilly-dallying.

They said that despite taking up the issue with the government on several occasions, no heed is being paid to their demands because of which they are forced to stage a peaceful protest.

Their demands include the appointment of five hundred Ayurvedic medical officers and five hundred Homoeopathic medical officers, creation of 100 posts every year and equal importance to their science at par with modern medical science.

As their demands went unheard, they protested wearing black badges from August 25 and on August 31 they locked the gate of the college. Since September 1, they have been staging a silent protest at the gate of the institution.

“No new post has been created over the past 21 years. So we demand the government to appoint five hundred Ayurvedic medical officers and five hundred Homoeopathic medical officers immediately. And, the government should also create 100 posts every year. We also demand respect and importance at par with modern medical science,” said a protesting student.

Another student alleged that the Health Minister and Health Director had earlier been intimated about our demands.
