The Odisha government has announced plans to construct seven new barrages on the tributaries of Mahanadi River to enhance water availability and management.
Panchayati Raj Minister Rabi Nayak confirmed this development while addressing concerns regarding drinking water supply in Odisha.

‘Odisha in Talks with Chhattisgarh’
Speaking on the issue in the Odisha Assembly, the Minister stated that discussions have been held with Odisha Chief Minister regarding the initiative. Furthermore, Odisha is engaged in talks with neighbouring Chhattisgarh to ensure the smooth flow of water into the state.
"We have discussed the matter with the Chhattisgarh government regarding water inflow, and Odisha’s Chief Minister held discussions with the Chhattisgarh Minister on this issue," the Minister informed.
Additionally, officials from both states, including respective commissions, also conducted meetings to address concerns, he said.
The construction of these barrages is expected to significantly improve irrigation, drinking water supply, and overall water resource management in Odisha, the minister added.
