The saying ‘Necessity is the Mother of Invention’ once again proved true when a Class IX student was felicitated by the Central government for the device she has developed to help pregnant women.
After coming to know about the pain of frequent miscarriages of the daughter of her domestic help due to bus travel, Rishita Samantaray, a Class IX student, thought to do something about it.
Someone else's plight forced Rishita to think seriously about the suffering of pregnant women who have to commute on public buses. Thus, the scientist in her started pondering over developing a device to solve this problem.
Finally, her endeavours bore fruit and she had the light bulb moment. She succeeded in developing a device that could help a pregnant woman travel without any fear of miscarriage of her pregnancy.
If the device is fitted at bus stops, pregnant women will hugely be benefitted. For her invention, the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, has recently felicitated her with the APJ Abdul Kalam Award. This apart, her invention has earned her several state awards as well.
“The device has the faces of pregnant women and all data about them is saved. If a pregnant woman scans her face and types the bus number on the device installed at a bus stop, the conductor of the bus will get a message on his mobile phone, informing him that a pregnant woman is travelling on his bus so that he can arrange a seat for her and take due care,” said Rishita.
“The roads are very bumpy in our country. The daughter of our house help suffered miscarriages twice while travelling on buses on these bumpy roads. From her sufferings, I got the idea of developing a device for women like her. I believe if this device is implemented properly, it will bring a huge relief to pregnant ladies,” she added.
Beaming with happiness, Rishita’s mother Rohini Singhdeo said, “The installation of the device would be helpful not only for pregnant ladies but also for senior citizens, physically challenged persons, or visibly impaired persons.”
