While fighting a fire, the problem of reaching inaccessible parts won’t haunt the firefighters anymore as the Odisha Fire Services Department has added ultramodern robots to its existing capabilities.
These robots are called Fire-Fighting Robotic Monitors and in the first phase, as many as 22 such robots have been included in the department’s existing tools. Without any sign of hesitation, these robots will enter into raging flames and tame them.
“In case of a huge explosion or something like that, we can’t enter into it as we can’t withstand the heat generated from there. In that case, these robotic machines will come in handy. With these machines we can control the fire easily,” said a firefighter.
“A machine is fitted with a set of delivery hoses through which it will carry water. It is also equipped with six sprinklers to cool its body while fighting a fire. It is also fitted with two cameras such as a normal camera and a thermal camera. While the normal camera helps an operator to operate it effectively, the thermal camera will send messages regarding temperature,” he said.

On October 29, when the state will be celebrating the Odisha State Disaster Preparedness Day, these robots will demonstrate their entire gamut of skills in the presence of Chief Minister Mohan Majhi.
Besides 22 Fire Fighting Robotic Monitors, the department has also got a K9 Squad. Like the police department, the fire department has also a K9 Dog Squad. In the first phase, the squad has 10 dogs to help the firefighters find people trapped under rubble in mishaps like earthquakes, landslides etc. Their performance will earn them rank, promotion and medal.
