Scores of farmers in several panchayats under Chandbali block in Bhadrak district are worried over the growing attack of 'Chakada' pests (Brown Plant Hoppers) on paddy. Though farmers are applying pesticides, it is allegedly ineffective against the pests.
Farmers alleged that due to pest attacks, the paddy plants are failing to give out shoots. They are worried that they won’t be able to repay their loans and borrowings that they have taken for the cultivation this year.
As per reports, pest onslaught on paddy is spreading in Bhatapada, Bhuinbruti, Tentulidihi, Madhapur, Ghatapur, Kheranga, and other panchayats where paddy crops are showing a distinct lack of growth. Worse, in some areas, the pests have even ruined the plants. It is said that if this problem continues, the farmers will suffer immense losses.
Meanwhile, farmers have demanded that the Agriculture Department should take remedial measures.
Farmer Nandakishore Sahoo said, "We all are worried as the pest menace is spreading. Farmers have taken loans and borrowed from others for paddy crops. In case of losses, they will be ruined.”
Another farmer Sushant Barik lamented, "Pesticides are not effective against the pests, which will certainly affect the harvest. What farmers will do in such a situation? If this happens every year, farmers will give up farming and migrate outside in search of other menial jobs.”
According to farmer Indramani Barik, though he has applied pesticides three to four times, the problem persists.
