In a heart-warming incident, a family in Odisha’s Khordha district paid tribute to their pet dog and performed all rituals as per Hindu customs after its death. The family of Chandra Shekhar Mahapatra from Khordha Gandhi Padia bid farewell to their pet dog ‘Gulupapa’ like their own son.
A large number of people participated to bid farewell to the pet dog that served Chandra Sekhar's family for 14 years.
“I have no children of my own. He was my son and lived with me for 14 years. I’m heartbroken after his death. His presence never made me feel bad about not having a child. He was very lively and brought a child-like atmosphere in the family,” said the owner, Basanti Mahapatra as tears rolled down her eyes.
“He has taught me a lot. I have an aim to open a hospital for animals in his remembrance,” Basanti added.
Basanti's husband, Chandra Shekhar Mahapatra also echoed the same feelings and said, “He was just 1 month old when I brought him home. My family members first saw him through an Ad by a man from Tankapani Road in Bhubaneswar. So, we decided to adopt it.”
“But, the way he treated us and loved us in return cannot be explained in words. He loved us so much that we started to fall in love with animals. He inspired me and filled us with so much love that we started falling in love with street dogs and cows and started caring for them,” he added.
“He played a huge impact in my daily life. Starting from morning to night, he would stay with me. He would keep waiting for me if I returned home late. So, we as a family now want to spread that same love that he bestowed upon us,” said a heartbroken Chandra Shekhar.
