For the first time in the history of Rath Yatra , the Odisha Fire Services and Emergency Department has deployed a dedicated Command Control Vehicle to ensure swift and centralized response during any untoward incident.
This marks a significant step towards modernizing and strengthening disaster and emergency management during large-scale religious festivals.
The specially-equipped vehicle has been stationed in Puri during the annual Rath Yatra to monitor, coordinate, and control emergency operations in real-time.
If any incident such as fire outbreaks, accidents, or medical emergencies occurs, the command vehicle serves as a mobile headquarters for immediate action and coordination between teams on the ground.
Fire and Emergency Services DIG Umashankar Dash on Saturday explained how the vehicle functions.
“The Command Control Vehicle is outfitted with advanced communication systems, live surveillance feeds, and GPS tracking. It allows us to maintain constant coordination with field units and other departments. In the event of any mishap, we can make informed decisions instantly from the vehicle itself,” said Dash.
Dash further informed that the vehicle is also equipped with internet, 10 cameras, generators, VHF sets and other advance gadgets.
This new initiative reflects the department’s proactive approach to handling crowd management and emergency situations in real time, especially during massive public gatherings like the Rath Yatra, which attracts lakhs of devotees from across the country and abroad.
The command vehicle not only enhances preparedness but also helps reduce response time drastically, something that can prove critical in saving lives during emergencies. It has become the nerve centre for monitoring the movement of chariots, managing crowd flow, and ensuring fire safety protocols are maintained throughout the celebration.
Officials added that the success of this initiative in Puri may pave the way for similar deployments during major festivals and events across Odisha in the future. The department has also trained its staff to handle this advanced system efficiently, ensuring seamless operations.
With this strategic upgrade, Odisha Fire and Emergency Services have added a new layer of security to this centuries-old festival, assuring devotees and citizens of a safer and more responsive management system.
