A couple was electrocuted to death after coming in contact with a live electric wire laid for the poaching of wild animals in the Nandapur police station area of Koraput district on Monday.
The deceased were identified as Bolaram Galel and his wife Bala Galel, residents of Geruput village. Sources reported that the couple had ventured into the nearby forest to collect firewood at about noon time yesterday but did not return home till late evening.
Neighbours and locals began a search operation for the duo and found them dead inside the forest late last night. Eyewitnesses suspected that the couple died on the spot after accidentally stepping on the live wire meant for the poaching of wild boars.
Subsequently, Nandapur police reached the spot and took note of the situation. Further, the police have assured that the people behind the laying of the live wire will be identified soon and stringent action will be taken against them.

Meanwhile, locals remain agitated and alleged that frequent such recurring cases of electrocution. They also alleged that despite such incidents and casualties the forest department had yet to act on the matter.
In a similar tragedy, a man lost his life after coming in contact with a live electric wire laid to trap wild boars in Baunsapal village under Kamakhyanagar police limits of Dhenkanal district.

Moreover, locals had alleged indiscriminate laying of electric wires by miscreants despite the deaths of several people and animals.
