In a tragic incident, an elderly couple in Nuapada district allegedly died by suicide after jumping in front of a moving Vande Bharat Express on Wednesday.
The couple was identified as 58-year-old Yaduram Pande and 56-year-old Jambai Pande of Silda village.
Reports stated that the duo was reportedly grappling with severe financial stress and long-standing disputes with their only son.
Tragedy Near Kalyanpur Level Crossing
The incident took place near the Kalyanpur level crossing, situated between Nuapada and Khariar Road railway stations, when the couple allegedly jumped before the Visakhapatnam–Durg Vande Bharat Express.
According to reports, they were returning home after visiting a relative in nearby Kalyanpur village for dinner.
Officials from the Kantabanji Government Railway Police (GRP) arrived at the scene shortly after the incident, recovered the bodies, and sent them for post-mortem examination.
The remains were later handed over to the family. Meanwhile, the GRP registered a case and initiated a formal investigation.
Family Rift, Financial Burden Cited as Key Factors
Local villagers told investigators that the couple had been living separately from their son for over two years due to unresolved domestic disputes.
The estrangement was reportedly compounded by mounting debt and persistent harassment by creditors, with the couple having no stable income to support themselves.
The Nuapada incident is the second railway-related suicide case in Odisha in recent months. In April, a 30-year-old man named Ramchandra Barjena from Khordha district died by suicide near the Nijigarh-Tapang railway line after recording a video blaming his wife for mental harassment.
