A new advisory committee was formed on Tuesday to consider the proposals for increasing the salaries of current Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) and the pensions of former legislators in Odisha.

This information was shared by Speaker Surama Padhy during the session of the Legislative Assembly. The panel led by MLA Bhaskar Madhei is tasked with preparing a report on the potential revisions. The report will guide any subsequent decisions regarding changes in remuneration and pensions.

Worth mentioning, Odisha MLAs across party lines had urged the Speaker Surama Padhy on September 4 to direct the Government to introduce a Bill to increase the salary and pension of sitting legislators and former Members.

Senior Congress MLA Taraprasad Bahinipati along with the BJD MLA Aswini Kumar Patra, BJP’s Sanatan Bijuli, and others had raised the issue during the Zero Hour of the Assembly as well. They highlighted the difficulties faced due to the existing salary package amid a rise in prices of commodities.
