Land acquisition for India’s largest green ammonia project in Gopalpur of Ganjam district has been completed, stated the joint-venture company of ACME and Japan’s IHI Corporation. The company released a statement to hail this milestone for the project, which is expected to position Odisha as the country’s leading green energy producer.

According to earlier reports, Cleantech major ACME Group had entered into a joint venture with Japan’s IHI Corporation. The collaboration builds on an initial Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2023 and has since progressed with key milestones.

Project Milestones and Production Plans

The Economic Times reported earlier this week that the facility has already been secured and Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) has been completed by a global engineering firm.

The plant is designed to produce around 0.4 million tonnes of green ammonia annually, with supply primarily destined for Japanese end users in the power and chemical industries. The project is expected to offset over 0.8 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions every year and is targeted for commissioning by 2029-30.

Strategic Significance for India and Japan

Notably, the joint venture is positioned as a cornerstone of the bilateral Clean Energy Partnership between India and Japan.

At the 15th Japan–India Annual Summit in Tokyo on August 29–30 this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba adopted a Joint Declaration of Intent on Clean Hydrogen and Ammonia.

The ACME–IHI collaboration aligns with this declaration by creating a dedicated supply chain for green ammonia between the two countries.

Contribution to National Green Hydrogen Mission

The joint venture supports the National Green Hydrogen Mission, which seeks to make India a leading producer and exporter of clean fuels.

With exports earmarked mainly for Japan, the project uplifts Japan’s plan to decarbonise its power generation and industrial sectors while simultaneously placing Odisha at the forefront of India’s green energy expansion.
