In a tragic case that has shaken Odisha, the State government is likely to announce a major decision by this evening regarding the self-immolation of a girl student from Fakir Mohan Autonomous College, Balasore. The Government had previously promised justice and swift action against the guilty.

According to sources, a crucial decision is expected by tonight in the Balasore FM College student Soumyashree Bisi’s death by suicide, which has ‘disturbed’ the Odisha government. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi is likely to take any significant action after returning from the President’s programme in Cuttack.
The incident triggered a high-level review meeting today, attended by the two Deputy CMs and the Revenue Minister. The government is determined to ensure justice for the deceased and her family, and has assured that everyone responsible for driving the girl to suicide—be it the Head of Department (HoD) or any other person—will come under probe.
The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) has confirmed that all necessary measures will be taken without delay. The Revenue Minister, addressing the Opposition's demand for a judicial probe, said that several judicial investigations in the previous (BJD-led) government yielded no reports or outcomes.
The Revenue Minister stressed that the current government is not interested in optics (the way in which an event or course of action is perceived by the public, typically in a political context) but in real accountability. The government's only goal, he reiterated, is to deliver justice to the victim’s family.
Details of the State government’s actions so far, current progress, and future steps have been compiled and are under review. Final decisions are expected after the CM’s return and subsequent meeting.
“We have accepted the views of the victim girl’s mother. In the entire process of cumulative negligence, whoever is responsible will be punished. We are taking all major or minor acts of omission into the purview of the probe,” Revenue Minister Suresh Pujari stated.
