In a fresh development in the Fakir Mohan Autonomous College suicide attempt case, the Crime Against Women and Children Wing (CAW & CW) of Odisha Crime Branch launched its inquiry into the fatal incident, on Sunday. A two-member team has arrived at the college in Balasore district to begin its investigation.

The probe team, comprising a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) and an Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), visited FM College in Balasore under the instructions of the Director General (DG), Crime Branch. Their objective is to independently verify facts and examine any lapses by the college authorities or individuals involved.
The CAW & CW team has begun questioning staff and inspecting relevant records as part of its probe. The Crime Branch DSP confirmed that a thorough analysis of the circumstances leading to the student’s alleged self-immolation attempt is underway.
This marks a parallel probe alongside the three-member committee of Higher Education Department, which is also probing the allegations of mental harassment, administrative failure, and role of the college authorities.
Probe by specialised wing focused on crimes against women and children underscores the seriousness with which the State government is treating the matter. The team is expected to submit its findings to the Crime Branch DG soon.
“A two-member team comprising of a DSP and an ASP will carry out a probe. We have just arrived here. We will discuss with the college committee. Suo motu we have initiated the probe,” Crime Branch DSP, Iman Kalyan Nayak, said to mediapersons.
Earlier in the day, a three-member inquiry committee began probing the attempted suicide by self-immolation by the female student, following allegations of mental harassment. The panel questioned college authorities on the first day of its investigation.
The inquiry, which officially commenced today, is aimed at uncovering the circumstances that led the girl student to take such a drastic step. The committee is investigating specific allegations of torture and evaluating the role of college administration, including the principal and the internal complaint committee.
