Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Sunday inaugurated the newly constructed Shaheed Laxman Naik Medical College building in Koraput, a 650-bed facility built at a cost of whopping Rs 280 crore. The move aims to enhance healthcare infrastructure in the region, ensuring that residents no longer have to travel long distances for advanced medical treatment.
The event marks a major milestone in the state’s continuous development drive, especially for the tribal-dominated district.
State-of-the-Art Medical Facility
The new medical college building boasts modern healthcare infrastructure and is expected to significantly improve access to medical services in Koraput and neighbouring districts. The Chief Minister assured that vacant posts of doctors and other medical staff will be filled soon, ensuring the facility functions at full capacity.
Boost to Regional Healthcare
Highlighting the significance of the project, the CM said, “The people of Koraput will get easy access for medical treatment from now. They don’t have to travel to distant places anymore.” This development is part of the state government’s broader vision to decentralise healthcare and bring quality services closer to rural and tribal communities.
Part of Wider Development Agenda
The CM emphasised that Koraput has now been firmly integrated into the state’s ongoing development trajectory. Plans were also announced for upgrading the Jeypore–Brahmapur–Bhubaneswar economic corridor to a six-lane highway, which will improve connectivity and stimulate economic growth.
Future Healthcare Projects
In his address, the Chief Minister revealed that new medical colleges will soon be set up in Dhenkanal, Jagatsinghpur, Bhadrak, and Nabarangpur, further strengthening the state’s healthcare network.
This inauguration is seen as a transformative step for Koraput, promising better health outcomes and fostering confidence in the public healthcare system.
