The Odisha Cabinet approved a proposal to enhance subsidies under the solar energy scheme. The proposal aims at providing an additional subsidy of Rs 25,000 for the ambitious Pradhan Mantri Suryaghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (free electricity scheme) (PMSG: MBY), in its meeting held on Friday.

This is in addition to the Rs 30,000 subsidy now being provided by the Central government for solar installations in different households, offering significant financial relief to families eager to switch to solar power.

“In order to provide free/ low cost & clean electricity to 3 lakh households across the State, contribute towards carbon neutrality and increase the renewable energy capacity addition in the State; the Cabinet approved the proposal of State Financial Assistance (SFA) for installation of Rooftop Solar to the extent of three lakh residential households which will be completed by March 2027 under the PMSG: MBY,” a press release mentioned.

In addition, the Cabinet has sanctioned a government guarantee programme for bank loans facilitated by the Odisha State Supplies Corporation (OSCSC). This measure is designed to ensure sustained financing and operational efficiency for state-run initiatives.

Worth mentioning, around 1.45 crore registrations have been done so far and 6.34 lakh installations completed under the yojana, according to a statement in Parliament.

The scheme was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the aim of achieving 1 crore rooftop solar installations in the residential sector by fiscal year 2027 with an allocated budget of Rs 75,021 crore.
