A low-pressure area is likely to form over the west-central Bay of Bengal and the adjoining northwest Bay on Tuesday, according to a forecast by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The weather system is expected to intensify further over the next 48 hours, bringing significant rainfall to various parts of Odisha.
The IMD has predicted that under the influence of the system, Odisha is likely to experience widespread and intense rainfall till May 30. Notably, this rainfall will not only bring relief from the prevailing heat but also accelerate the onset of the southwest monsoon.
The formation and strengthening of the system, coupled with an active trough line, are likely to make weather conditions favourable for the monsoon’s advance into Odisha.
Pre-Monsoon and Kalbaishakhi Showers to Continue for Five Days
Even before the monsoon sets in, several regions in Odisha are witnessing pre-monsoon showers and Kalbaishakhi (Nor’wester) storms.
The weather department expects that this pattern will persist over the next five days with weather characterised by sudden downpours, strong gusty winds, and thunderstorms.
Yellow Warning Issued for 15 Districts
In light of the developing weather system and the likelihood of Kalbaishakhi storms, the IMD has issued a yellow warning for 15 districts, valid for today. These include Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Kandhamal, Boudh, Sonepur, Balangir, Nuapada, Kalahandi, and Nabarangpur.
The IMD Regional Meteorological Centre at Bhubaneswar has further alerted that gusty winds blowing at speeds of 30 to 40 kilometres per hour may accompany thunderstorms in these districts.

Monsoon Likely to Arrive Soon
If the low-pressure system evolves as expected and remains active, the conditions will likely become conducive for the southwest monsoon to make a timely arrival in Odisha following its onset in Kerala, which occurred around May 24.
