Everyday citizens in Bhubaneswar will soon be able to own homes without a heavy financial burden, as the state government advances its affordable housing scheme.
Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra stated on Thursday that construction work has already begun at several locations in the city, and the first batch of houses will be handed over to beneficiaries very soon.
He added that the initiative, being executed through the Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) and the Odisha State Housing Board, aims to make homeownership feasible for low and middle-income families who have long struggled with high property prices in the state capital.
“The government intends to ensure that even ordinary people can secure a house in Bhubaneswar without spending beyond their means,” Mahapatra said.
Houses Between Rs 15–50 Lakh
Earlier unveiled in July, the scheme has been designed to offer units priced between Rs 15 lakh and Rs 50 lakh, allocated through a transparent lottery system.
The state Housing and Urban Development Department is spearheading the project under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, with tenders floated to ensure accountability in construction and delivery. Further, he added that in the future, this scheme will also be extended to other Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) and cities.
"The process has begun, and the land has been identified. Work on the project will begin in full force. Some of the projects will be done in PPP mode, whereas some will be taken up independently by the BDA. The Housing Board will also push such expansions to other ULBs and cities where population growth is leading to congestion and housing shortage,” said the Minister.
