The Jashipur unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday launched a six-hour bandh starting at 6 am. The bandh call is given in protest against the pathetic condition of roads in Jahsipur town.
From early morning, the BJP workers were seen picketing at strategic locations. While traffic movement on the National Highway 49, which passes through Jashipur town, and other roads has come to a grinding halt, educational institutions, business establishments, markets and shops remained closed.
However, emergency services like ambulance have been kept out of the bandh purview.
According to the protestors, the stretch from Jashipur market to Padampur Square on the NH-49 is riddled with potholes and craters, turning it into a virtual death trap. Hundreds of school students and office goers depend on this road to reach their destination. At peak hours, accidents are occurring on this stretch. Yet, neither the NHAI authorities nor the district administration is doing anything to improve the road condition.
Similarly, to minimise the traffic on the main road, a bypass was announced years ago. But this bypass has not been completed as yet. The local residents held the NHAI authorities and the concerned contractor responsible for this.
