There has been considerable improvement in the overall flood situation in Mahanadi, Baitarani and Brahmani river systems in Odisha, said Engineer in Chief, Water Resources Department, Bhakta Ranjan Mohanty on Monday.
According to Mohanty, there is no need to panic as there is only a base flow of around 4.5 lakh cusecs at Mundali. Similarly, there is not much inflow of floodwater from the upper catchment areas of Hirakud reservoir. The water level of Hirakud stood at 620 ft by 9 am today.
As per official sources, there is an inflow of around 1,75,000 cusecs and 3,50,000 cusecs are being discharged through Hirakud.
“As there is no rainfall in upper and down catchments areas, the overall situation will improve. We are hopeful that the Hirakud water level will come down to 615 ft by August 9,” said Mohanty.
On reports of rainfall activities in Subarnarekha and Budhabalanga basin, the senior official said that the situation is being monitored and appropriate steps will be taken accordingly.
