Residents of Badakhaman village in Talapada panchayat under Telkoi block of Keonjhar are forced to risk their lives by crossing the Samakoi river to collect Public Distribution System (PDS) rice. A troubling scene was recently witnessed in the area, where locals were seen carrying heavy sacks of rice while wading through a swollen river, highlighting the lack of a basic bridge facility.

With no existing bridge over the river that flows beside the village, the situation worsens during the monsoon. People have to step into the river, despite the dangerous current, to reach the Talapada panchayat for essential items like rice or for urgent needs like medical treatment. Villagers have been raising demands for a bridge for years, but no concrete steps have allegedly been taken to address their plea.

No Alternative In Sight During Emergencies

The residents alleged that it is not just about rice, but even during any medical emergency or critical work, they are compelled to cross the river. Despite repeated appeals, a bridge has not been built yet. Even now, during monsoon season, locals continue to risk drowning to reach the other side.

Bridge Construction To Begin Soon

Speaking on the issue, Keonjhar CDO Kumar Nagabhusan said, “We are currently reviewing the locations where bridges are required, including previously submitted proposals. The need for a bridge at Talapada had earlier come to our notice through media reports. This area was examined before for potential bridge construction, and we are now focusing on how soon it can be built. The Odisha Government has also directed the construction of bridges, especially in cut-off villages that are suffering due to the absence of connectivity over rivers and canals. We will ensure that a permanent bridge is constructed soon.”

Meanwhile, officials said the tendering process for the bridge has been completed, and the construction work is expected to begin shortly.
