New drone video of Puri Srimandir
In a fresh security breach at the Puri Jagannath Temple, a drone video has gone viral once again, raising serious concerns over the safety of the shrine. The footage, which was uploaded to Facebook on May 30 by a youth from Nabadwip, West Bengal, shows visuals of a Sevak climbing atop the Srimandir.
At one point, the servitor appears to deliberately acknowledge the drone’s presence doing “Namaskar ”, suggesting his prior knowledge of the drone's presence.
This act has sparked allegations that the video may have been recorded with the assistance of the Sevak, violating strict security protocols that prohibit any drone activity above the temple, particularly across the Meghanada Pacheri.
Video Shows Drone Near Nilachakra
The same video includes scenes of the Sevak tying the bana (temple flag) on the Nilachakra, which clearly indicates the drone was flying close to the sacred structure. The entire footage was uploaded under the name “Story by Naru Gopal” with a location tag pointing to Nabadwip Mayapur in West Bengal. Allegations have emerged that this individual possibly collaborated with the servitor in filming the prohibited visuals.
Temple Administration, Police Respond
When asked about the breach, officials from the temple administration and Puri police assured strict action against those found responsible. Investigations are currently underway.
Odisha Government Considers Anti-Drone Tech
This incident comes even as the Odisha government is actively exploring the installation of anti-drone technology at the Jagannath Temple. Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan stated that the matter is in advanced stages of discussion. “If needed, anti-drone technology will be used. We will urge the Odisha Police in this regard. The temple administration will arrange funds,” he said.
The planned system would detect and neutralise unauthorised drones, ensuring they are safely brought down within a specific perimeter.
In Similar Incidents…
Earlier this year, on January 5 when a drone approached from Dolamandap Sahi at around 4:10 AM. It was seen circling the Meghanada Pacheri, hovering over the Dadhinauti and Nilachakra, before retreating to its origin.
Another incident was reported on January 28, a drone was seen hovering over restricted zones of the Srimandir, including the Nilachakra. It remained airborne for nearly 25 minutes. CCTV footage is being reviewed, and police confirmed that a case has been registered.
