Construction of the second high-level bridge over the Baitarani River on the Salapada–Anandpur Road in Keonjhar district is progressing steadily, stated the Odisha Bridge & Construction Corporation (OBCC) in a post on ‘X’ on Wednesday.
The post detailed that the project is a critical step toward improving connectivity between NH-20 and SH-53, addressing the longstanding challenges posed by the existing bridge’s deteriorating condition.
Construction Progress and Sustainable Design
OBCC reported that current work includes the construction of lift retaining walls, shaft concrete pouring, and reinforcement of the P8–P9 deck slab.
The new bridge will feature approach roads, box culverts, roundabout junctions, and enhanced safety measures such as road signage and furniture. A significant addition is the 30KW solar-powered lighting system, aligning with global trends in sustainable infrastructure. This design choice reflects Odisha’s push for eco-friendly development, supported by research highlighting reduced carbon emissions in regional projects.
Tackling Infrastructure Deficiencies
The existing bridge, now in a distressed state, has limited traffic capacity, severely impacting local businesses and movement in Keonjhar.
The Baitarani River, known for its seasonal flooding, has historically disrupted the region’s 61,920 hectares of irrigated land, hampering economic growth. Once the new bridge is complete, authorities plan to restore the old structure, establishing dual connectivity to alleviate these constraints. This dual-bridge strategy is expected to revitalise trade and agricultural transport in the area.

Broader Regional Impact
The project forms part of Odisha’s infrastructure roadmap, which includes the construction of four new bridges, two over the Baitarani at Chandbali and Anandpur, backed by a Rs 4,600 crore investment in road development.
Enhanced connectivity is anticipated to improve market access for farmers and integrate rural labour markets, aligning with the state’s rural development objectives.
