A 20-year-old youth from Nepal collapsed and died while preparing for the Odisha State Armed Police (OSAP) Gurkha Sepoy recruitment in Jharsuguda on Sunday. Preliminary reports suggest he suffered a heart attack.

The deceased has been identified as Gobinda Kumal, a resident of Badigad village in Nepal’s Baglung district.

According to sources, Kumal had arrived in Jharsuguda to participate in the recruitment process of the OSAP 2nd Battalion. While training with other aspirants at the Reserve Police Ground around 7 am, he suddenly fell unconscious after complaining of severe chest pain.

His companions, Nepali nationals Tek Bahadur Rana and Sandip Rana, immediately sought help from OSAP havildar Jiban Prakash Shrestha, who arranged to shift Kumal to the battalion hospital. He was later moved to Jharsuguda District Headquarters Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

OSAP 2nd Battalion Commandant Sriprasad Tamang said the body has been kept at the hospital for post-mortem, which will be carried out once Kumal’s father arrives from Delhi.

The unfortunate incident has cast a pall over the recruitment drive, scheduled to commence on September 17.
