All that glitters is not gold and no one knows this better than a bar dancer. They have to undergo a lot of hardships as well as humiliation just to eke out a living and support family.

The recent death of Subhalaxmi Sahu, a bar dancer, has left several questions unanswered. OTV spoke to a bar dancer to know more about their lives.

“Nobody wants to become a bar dancer by choice. It is only due to our financial issues at home that we land up here. We get money but the middlemen are taking a major chunk of our income. We toil hard, face torture and a major portion of our income is taken away,” said the bar dancer.

According to the bar dancer, they also face humiliation in society when others tag and point fingers at them whenever they step out of their homes.

“During performances, we sometimes are misbehaved with but we endure all of it as we need money.  My family doesn’t know that I am a dancer at a bar as they will not allow me if I tell them about my job,” the bar dancer said.

Narrating more about the other side of her job, the bar dancer said, “When we dance, some customers approach us with money to take us to their room. All such things happen and many customers under the influence of alcohol say a lot of other things as well.”

Daily Life Is Struggle

Our lives are very tough as we step out of our homes by covering our faces out of fear of humiliation.
“It is only for this reason that we have to cover our faces. We have chosen this profession only to get money to support our family,” said the bar dancer.
When we land here, our lives totally change. Only those who are working as bar dancers can feel the pain, she added.

On Subhalaxmi’s Death

"Subhalaxmi’s death has certainly hurt us. We suspect that she might have been tortured for which she ended her life. Sometimes videos of many girls go viral and we also don’t feel safe,” she said.

Getting Settled

“We want to have a family. But when we come here, our lives change a lot. We don’t get love as those who marry us, they do only for money as they force us to continue to work as bar dancers and earn more,” she added.
