Mortal remains of Odia jawan Debashish Biswal consigned to flames at native village

The mortal remains of martyred Odia Army jawan, Lance Naik Debasish Biswal, was consigned to flames with full State honours at his native village Khandayat Sahi under Puri’s Sakhigopal police limits on Saturday.

The body of Biswal, who attained martyrdom in a terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district on Thursday, arrived at Bhubaneswar airport on Saturday morning in a special Indian Air Force aircraft where he was given guard of honour by the Army. Governor Professor Ganeshi Lal and other political leaders also paid tribute to the departed soul.

Following the wreath laying ceremony, the body was taken to Sakhigopal by an army convoy. And after that a huge procession followed which was joined by thousands of locals.

They chanted slogans 'Debashish Amar Rahe' and led the convoy to his village Khandayat Sahi where the mortal remains were consigned to the flames at the village crematorium.

“Debashish was the pride of our Panchayat. In fact, he is the pride of Odisha. Yes he has died, but he will remain in our memories for ages. Justifying his name, Sahitya, he will remain immortal like the pages of our ‘Sahitya’,” said a local.

As per reports, Debashsish’ family and friends awaited his arrival for his first wedding anniversary which falls on Akshay Tritiya (April 23), but it remained unfulfilled as only his mortal remains could reach the village after his death.

Biswal received martyrdom on Thursday. He was among the five army personnel who lost their lives in a terrorist attack in Poonch area of Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday.

Lance Naik Debashish Biswal from Alagum near Sakhigopal in Puri district is survived by his wife Seema and a 7-month-old baby.
