In a shocking misuse of public property, a Mission Shakti kendra built with government funds in Rengali panchayat of Odisha’s Angul district has allegedly been rented out and converted into a junkyard (Kabadi godown). Allegations suggest manipulation and illegal occupation by the members of a self-help group (SHG).

According to sources, the Mission Shakti centre previously constructed under the ambitious ‘Ama Gaon Ama Bikash’ scheme in Kaniha block of the district was found to be functioning as a junkyard rather than serving its intended purpose of empowering women through self-help group (SHG) activities.

Built in the 2018–19 fiscal year with a government allocation of Rs 5 lakh, the centre was meant to serve as a hub for SHG operations. However, for years now, it has been operating as a private makeshift scrap depot, raising serious questions about the local governance and accountability.

Eyewitnesses and local sources allege that SHG women, claiming to set up an old age home, misled the community and took over the open space around the centre. They allegedly constructed a structure and began renting it out to scrap dealers, collecting monthly rent in the thousands.

Children from nearby schools and clubs who used to play in the area have been displaced due to this unauthorised occupation. Residents are demanding immediate action.

When contacted, Kaniha block development officer (BDO) Tribikram Kumura stated, “I am unaware of any such incident but assure that a probe would be conducted based on the allegations. Necessary action will be taken after verification.”

Despite repeated attempts, the Mission Shakti department did not issue any official response as of the time of reporting.
