The body of an elderly man, who had gone missing three days ago, was recovered from the Champavati riverbed under Narayanpatna police station limits in Koraput district on Saturday evening. The deceased has been identified as Nachika Sambharu, a resident of Pural village.
According to police sources, Sambharu had gone out to sell vegetables but did not return home. It is suspected that he was swept away in floodwaters after heavy rains caused the river to swell.
Some locals spotted the body lying on Champabati riverbed on Saturday evening while grazing cows and informed the police. On being informed about the incident, the police and Fire Services personnel rushed to the spot and recovered the body. Later, the body was sent for post-mortem examination.
Police have registered a case, and further investigation is underway.
Notably, Koraput witnessed heavy rainfall for three days under the influence of low pressure. The incessant rain triggered landslides and swelled major rivers in the district.
Meanwhile, the local attributed the inordinate delay in bridge construction over the river near Dhepaguda has resulted in the death of Sambharu. Residents of two panchayats are dependent on the route to visit the district headquarters and demanded early completion of the bridge.
