Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced on Sunday an ambitious plan to set up a mega steel plant in Keonjhar, aimed at bolstering the region’s economy.

The announcement was made during the annual-day function at Chandra Sekhar College, Champua of the district. This envisaged investment for the project is expected to range between Rs 30,000 crore and Rs 40,000 crore, promising substantial economic upliftment.

JSW, POSCO ink MoU with Odisha Govt

Two leading corporations, India’s JSW Steel and South Korea’s POSCO, have earlier signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) with the State government to facilitate the project. This plant is anticipated to be a major employment generator and a catalyst for the regional infrastructure development.

The CM also pledged a grant of Rs 4 crore towards development of the college, underlining Government’s commitment to educational advancement in the State.

“I had in my mind to set up a mega steel plant in Keonjhar district, one day or the other. I had previously vowed for this and the Almighty was kind enough and I became the head of the government,” the CM said in his address to a huge gathering.

“A MoU has been inked by JSW and POSCO to set up the plant in Patana. The project will be constructed at a cost of Rs 30,000 crore to Rs 40,000 crore,” the CM expressed.

Rs 1 Lakh Crore investment in Keonjhar

“A total of about Rs 1 Lakh crore will be invested at different locations across the district such as Patana, Joda, Barbil, Sadar, Suakati, Anandapur, Harichandanpur, and Champua etc. The State has got total investment of Rs 17 Lakh crore through Utkarsh Odisha: Make-in Odisha Conclave 2025,” CM Majhi stated.

“Around 145 MoUs for projects worth Rs 13 Lakh crore have already been signed. This has generated nearly 9 lakh employment opportunities,” the CM added.
