During the previous government, media freedom was under threat and there was an undeclared whip denying advertisements to certain media houses, said Chief Minister Mohan Majhi on Saturday.

The Chief Minister attended a programme titled ‘One Nation, One Election’ organised on the occasion of the 10th annual function of a daily newspaper (The Nirbhaya) in Bhubaneswar.

While addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Majhi took a swipe at the previous BJD government, saying press freedom was throttled during its rule.

“During that period, an undeclared whip was issued directing no advertisements to be given to certain newspapers and media houses. Because those media houses refused to become 'His Master’s Voice'. When we came to power, the government became the people’s government. That situation doesn’t exist any longer. There is neither threat nor throttling,’ said Majhi.

No reactions were received from the BJD.
