Market and homes at Tarikund in Jagatsinghpur were flooded after the Machagaon canal embankment breached at two places between Daleighai and Tarikund on late Saturday night.
A breach of 15 feet has been detected near Daleighai and the breach at Tarikund is about 20 feet long, sources said.
Following the two breaches, the market at Tarikund has been flooded and knee-deep water was flowing on Cuttack-Jagatsinghpur road. This led to disruption in the movement of vehicular traffic for some time.
Assistant Executive Engineer of Balia Irrigation Division, Rajkishore Sahu said, “The breach was due to overflow of water in Machagaon canal. There was a problem with Taladanda canal. So all the excess water of Taladanda and drains of Cuttack were released in Machagaon Canal, making it overflow.”
“We have already regulated the water at Biribati and the breaches are being plugged by using sand packets. The situation is under control and we will be able to seal the breached embankments soon enough,” said Sahu.
Worthwhile to mention here that there are two canals; Taladanda and Machhagaon canal flowing through Jagatsinghpur for irrigation purposes.
